- The Ethereal plane is a plane of swirling proto-matter coexisting
- alongside Prime Material planes, touching the Prime at all points. The
- Ethereal is the cosmic "glue" that binds together the realities. It also
- contains the stuff that new demi-planes are made of. It is a rolling,
- chaotic plane filled with swirling fogs and shadowy shapes in various
- degrees of solidity, Travelers and the few natives that exist in this
- plane appear semi-sold as well, and non-living objects can pass through
- each other easily.

- The first-time visitor deep within the plane may find themselves
- completely surrounded by colorful mists, ir in areas that resemble small
- towns on misty, fog-bound evenings. There is gravity in the sense of up
- and a down direction, but the ethereal visitor can move in all
- directions freely. Visitors and other objects are supported by the
- ethereal medium, so that unsupported objects do not fall in Ethereal
- plane, despite the existence of a down direction. The traveler in the
- Ethereal consists of the same base mater5al, and therefore has the same
- density, as the surroundings.

- The Ethereal is unique in that a visitor may exist simultaneously in
- both the Ethereal and another plane, in a region of the plane known as
- the Border_Ethereal*.. The Border is considered part of the plane while
- the non-border areas are known as the Deep Ethereal.

- The Ethereal can be thought of as a great ocean, so that a traveler
- can wade along the beach (in the Border Ethereal) alongside familiar
- lands, or journey across the Ethereal Ocean (the Deep Ethereal) into new
- lands.

- The Ethereal is used as a means of travel or passage of energies and
- mater from the Prime to the inner (or elemental) places.

- A traveler becoming ethereal slowly disappears from view, taking a round
- to fade away, whether entering the Deep Ethereal; or the Border
- Ethereal. The Ethereal traveler is invisible for as long as he remains
- in the Ethereal, to those on the Material plane. Materializing takes a
- full round as well.

- :Border_Ethereal

- To use the analogy of the Ethereal as an ocean, a person in the
- Border Ethereal is standing in the surf of that ocean where it meets the
- shore. He can see what is happening on the shore, and he can move along
- the shore, but he is still in the water. Thus a traveler standing in the
- Border Ethereal can see into the Prime plane, but he is still an
- ethereal being.
- Subjective time flows for the traveler in the Border Ethereal as for
- the plane he is viewing. In the Border Ethereal time flows at the same
- rate as 'true time'.
- An individual in the Border Ethereal is invisible to those in the
- bordering plane, although he can be detected from that plane by means of
- various spells. Such a traveler would appear as a smoky, translucent
- shade. Travelers in the Border Ethereal are visible to others in the
- Border Ethereal.
- Individuals in the Border Ethereal cannot communicate verbally with
- the inhabitants of the plane they border, nor can they use equipment,
- items or spells to attack individuals in the plane they border. Likewise
- inhabitants of the other plane cannot attack those on the Ethereal, save
- those spells that may draw one from one plane to the other.
- Border Ethereal creatures can attack each other, and they can be
- attacked by creatures that have attacks capable of reaching into the
- ethereal plane.
- Travelers on the Border Ethereal can move through at the same speed
- they can travel on the plane they border, with their usual movement
- abilities. The Ethereal Traveler can also move through solid objects on
- the plane they border without ill effects in most cases. Stone can be
- breached without creating an opening, and thru a normal fire or volcano
- unscathed provided it is on the material plane. Damage that DOES extend
- into the ethereal plane does affect the ethereal traveler.
- One means of stopping movement of an ethereal traveler thru a wall is
- an alchemical mixture containing gorgon's blood that is mixed with mortar
- to prevent passage thru the walls. This tends to be quite expensive.
- Additionally certain dense metals (Pure Lead or gold) cannot be viewed
- thru nor passed thru from the ethereal plane.
- Living beings cannot be passed thru on the material plane by a
- traveler in the ethereal, due to the nature of their magnetic auras.
- Thus a ethereal traveler cannot seek to kill by materializing partially
- inside a person or beast. Even living plants have such and thus a vine
- covered wall cannot be passed thru by an ethereal traveler.
- The plane adjoining the Border Ethereal is visible to the ethereal
- traveler but not clearly, more in a dream-like form. All colors are
- reduced to shades of grey, so that dark green and dark blue are
- identical blacks. Furthermore sight into the adjoining plane is limited
- to about 120 feet in daylight. A traveler with infravision will be able
- to see the same at night but someone with an ethereal light source would
- not - the light from the ethereal plane does not show into the material
- plane.
- While a traveler is in the Border Ethereal they are immune to the
- greatest problem of the Ethereal, the ether cyclone. Breathing in the
- Border is as if they were on the material plane, except they cannot
- drown or smother or be affected by gaseous poisons.
- Beyond the curtain of the Border Ethereal lies the Deep Ethereal, and
- there the rules of time change......

- Time on the Deep Ethereal moves slower than on the material plane.
- For every 10 rounds spent on the Deep Ethereal a single round passes on
- the Material plane. Aging too occurs at the subjective rate for
- travelers so that effects that would normally age one 10-40 years would
- instead age one by 1-4 years.

- Vision in the deep ethereal is limited to about 120' or less.

- In combat, non-magical weapons do NO damage on the Deep Ethereal.
- Magical ones ONLY do damage equal to their PLUSES in combat. poison does
- not harm an ethereal individual. Non-magical armour is worthless,
- magical armour will ONLY absorb their pluses in damage. ARmour
- hindrances to Prowness are also ignored on the Ethereal plane. Nets,
- ropes and other tangling attacks are impossible on the Ethereal Plane.

- :Beacons

- Mages and creatures used to the Ethereal plane often use personally
- crafted magical items to act as beacons to various places on the
- material planes so that they may return to them easily. Mages often use
- their personal wizard mark this way, as from the Ethereal plane these
- will who as bright red lights in the dark greys and blacks of the
- material plane from a distance of several miles.

- Natives and constant travelers may have other devices and means of
- controlling their travel in a similar way.

- 01-50 Flow of the Ether disrupted. Add 4 hours to
- the travel time expected.
- 51-75 Party is blown thru a curtain into the Border
- Ethereal at a random plane or demi-plane.
- 76-90 Party is blown WAY off course into a random
- plane. Journey will take 5d10 days added to
- travel time.
- 91-95 Party is blown into the astral plane.
- 96-00 Party is blow into the DREAM PLANE!!!

- :Ethereal_Magic

- Magic, in some cases, works differently in the Ethereal Plane. For
- example RITUALS are not possible, as a magic circle cannot be laid
- out properly to confine the casters.

- Spells are all +10% to succeed here over the normal levels of the
- Prime Material Plane - The Ethereal plane is FAR more magical!

- Summoning spells, except those that draw beings from the ASTRAL
- or MATERIAL planes (which don't work at all) cost 1 point less
- to cast.

- When casting ILLUSIONS on the Ethereal Plane, you will get ADDED
- DURATION by one rank for the price you pay, since much of the stuff
- of illusion is made from the proto-matter of the Ethereal Plane.

- Silver Guild DIVINATION spells fail to work on the beings ON the
- Ethereal Plane while in the Ethereal Plane, but will still work on
- those in the Material Plane if in the BORDER Ethereal.
